# Add a Claude API key

> Organization API keys, usage charges, and demo answers

Genkeychat calls Claude using your own Anthropic API key. In the dashboard, open Settings → API keys and add a key starting with `sk-ant-`. The key is used by bots in that organization. The screen shows only the last four characters, not the full key.

## After adding a key

* Bot tests and public chats make real API calls. Anthropic bills for search, page retrieval, and answer generation.
* If you delete the key, bots using it can no longer generate real answers.
* Sample responses shown in the dashboard before a key is added do not use information retrieved from your site. They are marked as demo answers in conversation history.
* Start a new conversation when switching from demo responses to real answers.

You do not need to put your API key in the embed code or on a public page. To manage usage, also configure [Public chat limits](/en/embed/security-and-limits).
